Located in the Kasur and Lahore districts of Punjab, Changa Manga is the first man-made forest of PakistanThe forest is located in the tehsil Chunian, District Kasur, 75 KM south-west of Lahore. Changa Manga is also considered as one of the oldest artificial forests which comprises over an area of 48.6 square kilometers. The forest was planted by the British foresters back in 1866 with the aim to providing wood fuel for the railway steam engines. The forest is considered as a popular tourists’ destination. 

The History of Changa Manga

The etymology of the name ‘Changa Manga’ is very interesting. The name is derived from an old tale of two criminal brothers namely Changa and Manga. They took shelter in this dense forest from the British peacekeepers and were a constant source of threat among the local people. In 1960, Changa Manga Forest Park was developed.


The Changa Manga wildlife preserve is a popular wildlife park in Lahore district. The forest is also serving as a wildlife breeding center. Changa Manga Plantation is being managed as an outdoor recreation park also.

 Tree & Wildlife species in Changa Manga

Changa Manga is a habitat for various species of trees. A few of these species include Acacia, Kikar, Sheesham, White Mulberry, Eucalyptus and various types of Populus trees. 

The forest is also home to different types of wildlife species including Indian peafowl, wild boar, gold jackal, hog deer and nilgai. 


The recreational facilities

Currently, the forest is maintained by the Punjab Forest Department. Although the forest still suffers budget constraints, it has managed to do a wonderful job to provide excellent services to its visitor’s. 


Some facilities for recreation in the form of Lunar Lake for boating, a pagoda, picnic lawns, suspensions bridges, swimming pool, mini zoo and the wildlife parks. To facilitate visitors, there is also a four bedroom Motel and five bed forest rest houses. For the improvement of the forest, the tourism department has provided funds to add many new facilities.
