Peshawar Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) was inaugurated by Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan and he said that this is "the best metro bus project in the country".

Peshawar BRT Project Overview

Peshawar Bus Rapid Transit (Peshawar BRT) is a Rapid bus transit system by the Peshawar Development Authority (PDA) in Peshawar, KPK. This transit is divided into two separate phases, the first phase of the Trans Peshawar BRT system will encompass an east-west corridor to be served by 30 stations with an initial 220 buses out of which 155 are 12-meter-long buses while 65 are 18-meter-long buses. BRT project inaugurated on August 13, 2020

This Transit has been stretched from GT Road to Hayatabad, which blocks when under pressure due to heavy traffic, resulting in people sitting in traffic for hours which causes pollution and petrol, fuel and gas wastage, Prime Minister said.

Trans Peshawar’s first phase consist of an east-west bus way which will stretch from Chamkani in the east end to the Karkhano market in the west end of Peshawar city. It is planned that feeder routes will also start either before or along side main corridor.

The transit system have 30 stations currnetly and will be mostly elevated in future expansions. The line consists of approximatley 3.4 kilometers of underpasses, 10.5 kilometers of at grade and 13.7 kilometers of elevated part. The entire busway secure and fenced to prevent unauthorized entries and people and pedestrian crossings, and to prevent vehicular traffic from entering. However, passerbys can use stairs, elevators or bridges to cross the BRT corridor and reach on the other side.

Transit Buses

Trans Peshawar was originally planned to use a fleet of 255 buses, of which 155 will be 12 meter-long buses, while 65 will be 18 meter-long buses. The articulated buses will run only within the Service route/within corridor while the 12 meter-long buses will run in primarily in the Feeder system.

The BRT Buses are the low entry type which will allow easy access and entry and egress from the doorways, especially for patrons using wheelchairs. Every bus provides free Wifi services for passengers, while stations also have toilet facilities. Buses arrive every 3 minutes during peak hours, and every 5 minutes during non-peak hours on designated routes

Additionally, the buses are Diesel-Electric Hybirds which will allow them to have improved overall fuel economy and lower emissions. For this purpose, separate charging stations are also built to allow for recharging of the vehicle batteries adequately. All these buses are environment friendly and will reduce the air pollution in the city and improve living atmosphere.

Transit Bus Fare

Peshawar BRT fare start from Rs.10 which will go up to Rs. 50 depending on the distance traveled.

Work on the bus project was launched in October 2017 with the then chief minister, Pervez Khattak, and a deadline of six months for its completion at a cost of Rs49 billion. However, due to frequent design changes, updates and some other issues which caused the project to miss the first deadline and also increased its cost.

Subsequently, the project management team changed the launch dates multiple times. However, finally the project was successfully completed and launched
